Home of Chief Justice John Marshall, Houdon's Statue of Washington, St. John's Church, Virginia State Capitol Building, Capitol Square, Virginia Historical Society, The Poe Shrine, Confederate White House, General Lee's Home. Sailing up the James River in 1607, Captain Christopher Newport with Captain John Smith and company discovered the site of Richmond. It was founded as a city in 1737. Richmond became the capital of Virginia in 1779 and in 1782, the Continental Congress transferred from Williamsburg. It was the capital of the Confederacy in the War Between the States, 1861-1865. Built on seven hills, Richmond has often been called the Monumental City, due to its many points of beauty and historic interest.
