Sailing up the James River in 1607, Captain Christopher Newport with
Captain John Smith and Party, discovered the site of Richmond. It was
founded in 1737 by Colonel William Byrd, Incorporated as a town in 1742
and as a city in 1782. Richmond became the capital of Virginia in 1779,
when the seat of government was transferred from Williamsburg. It was
the capital of the Confederacy in the War Between the States, 1861-1865.
