CALICO HOUSE - CALICO, CALIFORNIA
Calico House is located on the right hand side of Main Street
as one enters the Silver Camp of Calico. Unlike other camps the
silver in Calico never petered out. Lafayette Mecham was one
of the early pioneers of San Bernardino County and, in 1869,
operated a store at Camp Cady an army post. A short time
later he moved to Fish Ponds, now called Barstow, where he
established a trading post. A horse was stolen from his place
and Mecham, along with a Frenchman, trailed the thief to the
Calico Hills where he noticed a large red vein. Some time later
Frank Mecham, son of Lafayette, related the incident to Sheriff
King and thought he could find the vein that his father had
mentioned. Frank, his uncle Doc Yager and two deputy sheriffs,
Tom Warden and Hue Thomas, grubstaked by King, set out for
the hills. In a short time they located the vein and put up an
irregular parallelogram monument and named the claim, "The
Silver King Mine"... M.P.
