HOLLISTER, CALIFORNIA
In the autumn of 1868 the San Justo Homestead Associa-
tion was formed by a group of fifty farmers, who held in
it one share each. They purchased from Colonel W. W.
Hollister the eastern part of Rancho San Justo, containing
21,000 acres, for the sum of $400,000 and divided the
best part of the land into fifty homestead lots - one for
each member. One hundred acres in the middle was
reserved for a town site and was laid out in blocks, lots
and streets. This one hundred acres is now the center of
Hollister. The new town has been the county seat of San
Benito County since February 12, 1874, when the county
was formed from part of Monterey County and later by
additions from Fresno and Merced. . M.P.
