Additional Details:
When one drives west on highway 66 from Holbrook, Arizona, named for H. R. Holbrook, first engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific R. R. (later the Santa Fe), the snow covered San Francisco Peaks may be seen in the distance. Joseph City was founded in 1876 as Allen's Camp and is the oldest town in Navajo County. Winslow was first settled in 1882 as a division point on the Santa Fe. With the development of stock-raising Winslow became one of the largest towns in northern Arizona. There are trading posts along the highway that deal in Indian crafts. This is a land of Indian ruins, Petrified Forests, Craters, and an area rich in western history. Weeks could be spent here to explore and sight-see.
