MISSION SAN LUIS OBISPO
When Fray Junipero Serra established the mission, fifth of
the chain, September 1, 1772, he found the Indians of
the place friendly because soldiers of the Gaspar de Portola
expedition three years before had killed several bears
that were terrorizing the Indian Rancherias. The burning
of the tule-thatched mission roofs three times in a row led
the friars to experiment with making tiles, which proved
so successful that they became the fashion, after 1794,
for all the California Missions. . M.P.
