BEALE MEMORIAL CLOCK TOWER
Bakersfield, California
This structure is a full scale replica of the original tower built
in 1904 at the corner of Chester and 17th Street, and was
destroyed by the 1952 earthquake. In 1852 Ed Beale was
made Superintendent of Indian Affairs for California and
Nevada. He at once initiated a policy of honest and humane
dealings with the Indians. Beale deserves to be classed as one
of the great pathfinders of the west, along with Kit Carson
and Fremont. Beale was the first to carry California gold to
the east. An enthusiastic advocate of the army camel corps,
he made the trip to San Diego to advise Stockton of General
Kearny's situation at the battle of San Pascual. He built
roads, surveyed routes and acquired extensive holding,
Rancho El Tejon. He was a true builder of the southern part
of California... M.P.
