PARKER, ARIZONA
Parker is a trading center for the area along the Colorado
River of resorts and the farming area of the Colorado River
Indian Reservation. The Indian Reservation is the home of
the Mojave and Chemehuevi (branch of the Paiute) tribes.
No peace treaty has ever been made between the Mojave
and the United States. By an act of Congress in 1886 the
Mojave was assigned this reservation, a land that they long
had lived on. Most of the arts of both tribes are lost. The
early immigrants had their most perilous part of the trip in
the Mojave country. They were good fighters and preferred
hand-to-hand combat. Later they became good farmers and
breeders of horses. The Chemehuevi raise cattle and do
some farming. The women are excellent basket
weavers... M.P.
