BAKER, CALIFORNIA
Baker is a desert town that is the south gateway to
Death Valley. This was on the Tonopah and
Tidewater railroad that replaced the Twenty mule
team that hauled borax out of Death Valley. The
town has grown from a sleepy stop to a modern
desert town with gas stations, motels, restaurants,
and food store. West of Baker is a great dry surface
of Soda Lake. Here in 1860 Indians and dragoons
of the U.S. Army fought a battle under Lt. Carr.
The army maintained a fort-like camp here until
1866..M.P.
