Las Vegas, Nevada. Las Vegas, second largest city in
Nevada, is situated in the southern part of the state,
on U. S. Highway 91, about 32 miles northeast of Boulder
Dam. The elevation is 2033 ft. The city was settled
by Mormons in 1855, and sections of their original fort
may still be seen here. Las Vegas enjoys a lively tourist
trade, resulting largely from its close proximinity to the
vast recreational facilities of Lake Mead and the great
Boulder Dam Area. The nearby Charleston Mts., noted
