BULLHEAD CITY, ARIZONA
Bullhead City is located on the Colorado River a short dis-
tance below Davis Dam, and near the ghost town of Oatman,
named for the pioneer family who was attacked by Apaches
near Gila Bend in 1851. This area is the traditional home of
the Mojave tribe. When Father Garces went up the Colorado.
River in 1775 he estimated there to be over three thousand
indians. Today there is a very small part of this number.
Hernando de Alarcon is thought to be the first white man to
navigate the river. The river was the main method of trans-
portation until the coming of the railroad in 1880. Uncle
Sam is credited with being the first steamer to navigate the
Colorado River, in 1852. There were a number of steamers to
sail up the river but they all foundered or exploded. With the
building of dams river travel came to a stop. . . M.P.
