LANCASTER, CALIFORNIA
Lancaster is located in Antelope Valley, geographically a part
of the Mojave Desert. It derived its name from the immense
herds of antelopes which roamed the valley and was the
hunting paradise of Andres Pico and other Californios. John
C. Fremont, coming down from the north by way of Oak
Creek Pass, on April 15, 1844, traveled over the valley along
the base of the mountains to Cajon Pass where he connected
with the Spanish Trail. Of this trip he wrote of the strange
sight of the yucca forests and the fields of California poppies
