BANNING, CALIFORNIA
This San Gorgonio Pass town was laid out in 1883 by Phineas
Banning, a stage coach operator. Wild camels roamed over
the near-by desert in 1890 and the last one was shot in
1913. These were aged survivors of the army caravans that
crossed the desert prior to the Civil War. The stage started
operation in 1862 but Indians did much to discourage travel.
Passengers also protested at the frequency with which they
had to climb out and help the stage out of the sand. The
Southern Pacific laid its tracks through here in 1875, after
first winning the friendliness of the Cahuilla Indians by
promising them free rides. . . M.P.
