Beneath this monument, erected in 1848 by the state of Tennessee, lies Meriwether Lewis. He was a Captain in the United States Army, Private Secretary to President Jefferson, Senior Commander of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and Governor of the Territory of Louisiana. In the Grinder House, the ruins of which are still discernible 230 yards south of this spot, his life came to a tragic and mysterious end on the night of October 11, 1809. |
