SAAR BASIN'S COAL INDUSTRY
The Saar Basin, one of the main coal producing areas of western
Europe, was put under French administration after World War I as
compensation for French coal mines destroyed by the Germans. Annexed
by Hitler after the Saar plebiscite of 1935, the population of the
Saar Basin voted, in 1947, by overwhelming majority for an economic
union with France. A series of agreements were signed by France and
the Saar, giving the Saar a large measure of autonomy and France a
50-year lease on coal mines. The mines are administered by the Regio
des Mines, French coal mining authority in the Saar. France has
spent some 13 billion francs (over $3 million) for modernization
and rehabilitation of the mines since 1948. Coal production has now
risen to over that of pre-World War II. The majority of the Saar
population is employed directly or indirectly by the coal industry.
According to the Schumann Plan 34% of the Saar coal production goes
to France (incl. Saar), 35% to Germany and 31% to the Ponelux
tries and Italy.
