The Bureau of Printing and Engraving, Washington, D. C. is a branch of the United States treasury and the most interesting part of its work is keeping the nation supplied with money. It gives employment to about 4,100 people and its average total daily output is between six and seven million dollars in value, the highest bill printed having a face value of $10,000,00. Besides the engraving of plates for, and printing United States gold and silver certificates and National Bank notes, here are also made Postage and Internal Revenue Stamps, checks, bonds and all government paper securities. The new structure as here pictured is the largest of the department buildings, having a total floor space of 445,000 square feet. It is 296 feet by 505 feet, and on the east side are three courts, which add to the great area of windows, for light and air. It is constructed of steel and reinforced concrete throughout and is faced with Indiana limestone. |
