THE MCLEAN HOUSE, Appomattox Court House,
Virginia. Built, 1848. On April 9, 1865, R. E. Lee met
U. S. Grant in this residence and surrendered the
Army of Northern Virginia to end the four year War
Between the States. The house was razed 1893
with the intent to re-erect it in Washingto
but the removal was never effected. Reconstructed by
the National Park Service, 1949.
