VENTURA, CALIFORNIA
Ventura was named after the Mission San Buenaven-
tura, named after the title given a saint, meaning
"good fortune." When Cabrillo landed here on Oct.
10th, 1542 he found large villages of Indians with
finely built boats that would carry up to twenty
people. The county was formed in 1872 with land
taken from Santa Barbara County. The mission was
established on March 31, 1782 near the Indian vil-
lage of Mitz-Kana-Kan. Farming has been carried on
from the very first, gold was found as early as 1837
while petroleum production started in 1872. Most of
the manufacturing is in food processing plants and
petroleum refining... M.P.
