Was launched Oct. 21, 1797, under her first sam-
mander, Captain Samuel Nicholson. In 71-798 She
helped clear the West Indies welbas our w
coastline of French privateers and bombarded he
forts at Tripoli in 1803 to 1805. During the War of
1812 she won a succession of victories, over the
British Fleet. It was Oliver Wendell Holme's poem.
"Old Ironsides" which prompted the people to raise
money for the preservation of this ship 1833
