NEWFOUND GAP PARKING AREA, Great Smoky Mountains
National Park. This large parking area is on top of the
main range of the Great Smoky Mountains on the North
Carolina-Tennessee State Line. It is the highest point on
the Transmountain Highway being 5045 feet above sea
level. At the far end of the parking area is the stone terrace
memorial to Laura Spelman Rockefeller, whose son John D.
Rockefeller, Jr. matched the money raised through dona-
tions and public funds to buy the land for the Park.
