Brave and expert. sailors
from the Azores, they came
first as crowman aboard
American whaling and soal-
ing vessels, and then settled
down to stay, bringing their
families and raising a new
generation of Portuguese-Amer
icans

Island. The original 588 ton vessel was built in
1836 and sailed from New York to Stonington,
Newport and Providence until 1849. The vessel
was lost en route to California in 1850. This
model in the Lighthouse Museum, Stonington,
CT. was built by Manuel Jerome Francis.
