Monument to Dr. John W. Richmond (1775-1857)
of Rhode Island in small private cemetery, North
Road, Stonington, Conn., who bought the land
and left a small fund for its maintenance as he
was "unwilling that the remains of himself and
his family should be disgraced by being a part
of the common earth of a repudiating state"
meaning Rhode Island and the repudiation of her
war debts.
