An exact proportionate picture of the Clermont, built by Robert Fulton in 1807, and the Mauretania, a modern leviathan of the Ocean. The Clermont was 150 feet long, 18 feet wide and 7 feet deep, with a displacement of 160 tons. Her engines were of 24 inch diameter in cylinder and 4 feet stroke of piston. Her boiler was 20 feet long by 8 feet pressure. Her speed was about 5 miles per hour. The Mauretania is 790 feet long, 88 feet wide and 60 1/2 feet deep. She is of 32,000 tons and her turbine engines develop 68,000 horse power giving her a speed of over 25 miles an hour. The Mauretania holds the record for the fastest trip across the Atlantic. |
