1916 PACKARD
Twin-Six Touring Car 12 cyl. 43 h.p.
Model 1-35 Price new: $3,150
The Packard Twin-Six started a revolution in the American automobile industry.
It had the first twelve-cylinder high-speed engine in an American car. Luxuriously
built, it was far superior in performance to any automobile preceding it. The
engine was so flexible that the Packard salesmen could start it in high gear with
the clutch engaged. A touch of the starter and the car would drive smoothly away
without bucking. This Packard also featured one of the first thermostatically con-
trolled cooling systems. The ignition and carburetion controls were located on a
special box high on the steering column, handy to the driver. Brakes were one of
the Twin-Six's few weak points; for such a large automobile, the drums were much
too small, and, like all other American cars of that era, engaged only the rear wheels.
