The Hopi Indians of Arizona have many in-
teresting religious ceremonies, in each of which 1925
the kiva, or underground council chamber, plays
an important part. Here gather the priests and
medicine men for council, for prayer and for song.
As a rule they are an intensely religious people
and devote much of their time to performances of
elaborate ceremonies, in which, owing to the aridity
of the climate, prayers for rain predominate.
