AND MERRIMAC. In Hampton Roads, Virginia,
March 9th, 1862, in the immediate vicinity of the location
now occupied by the Exposition. It was the first con-
flict between ironclad vessels, and inasmuch as it revo-
lutionized naval warfare of the world, it can be justly
said to be the most important engagement in history.
