NO. 82. HENRY CLAY STATUE,
(CAPITOL SQUARE,) RICHMOND, VA.
This marble statue of the author of the
"Missouri Compromise" was executed by Joel T.
Hart, a native of Kentucky, and unveiled April
12th, 1860. It is said to be an excellent likeness of
Clay, through the uncouth habiliments which
clothe the figure (perhaps a too faithful rendering
of the style of the period) rather detract from a
proper appreciation of the artistic value of the
effigy.
