Elephant Hotel, Margate City, Atlantic City, N.J.
Additional Details:
Lucy the Elephant, also known as the Elephantine Colossus, is a six-story, 65-foot high elephant-shaped example of novelty architecture, constructed of wood and tin sheeting in Margate City, New Jersey, a seaside resort town just south of Atlantic City. Built in 1881 by James V. Lafferty, Lucy was originally intended as a way to attract real estate buyers to the area. Lucy has survived several fires and hurricanes and remains a popular roadside attraction. She is currently owned by the Save Lucy Committee, a non-profit organization dedicated to her preservation. |
