In the 1984 games at Los
Angeles, the competition
I have most enjoyed
watching is women's
volleyball.

Friends took up a collection to send Cuban
mailman Felix Carvajal to the 1904 Olympic
games. Felix lost the funds in a dice game
at New Orleans, and hitchhiked the rest of
the way to St Louis, Missouri. He arrived
hungry and tired, just in time for the ma-
rathon. American friends chopped down his
outfit and lent him shoes. Despite pauses
to chat with spectators--and cramps caused
by apples he grabbed off a tree--Felix won
fourth place in the marathon. August 30.
