Friends took up a collection to send Cuban mailman Felix Carvajal to the 1904 Olympic games. Felix lost the funds in a dice game at New Orleans, and hitchhiked the rest of the way to St. Louis, Missouri. He arrived hungry and tired, just in time for the marathon. American friends chopped down his outfit and lent him shoes. Despite pauses to chat with spectators--and cramps caused by apples he grabbed off a tree--Felix won fourth place in the marathon, August 30.
