INDIO, CALIFORNIA
Indio has come a long way from its start in 1876 when it was
an Indian camp. When highway traffic started, the town grew
as the railroad brought in more vagrants than settlers. Tourist
travel brought fine motels and the best in restaurants. Indio is
the date center of America, as the first date tree was im-
ported in 1904. The town is encircled by mountains that are
snow-covered in the winter, in the spring the valley floor is
covered with flowers. Salton Sea, formed when the Colorado
River poured into the Salton Sink in 1905, is a short distance
to the south... M.P.
