M.I.T. AUDITORIUM Dedicated May 8, 1955
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS
Made possible by the generosity of the
Kresge Foundation
The Auditorium is unique in that its dome, a
triangular curved slab of concrete with a load
of 1,500 tons (1,361 mt), is supported by the
three corners. The concrete at the top of the
dome is only 3½ inches (9 cm) thick. In propor-
tion to its area, it is thinner than an egg shell.
Interior walls of the Auditorium are not connect-
ed structurally with the dome, permitting it to
expand and contract with the temperature.
