The picturesque pueblo of Laguna lies
66 miles west of Albuquerque, New
Mexico, on the Santa Fe.
It was founded in 1699 by refugee
Indians from Acoma, Zuni and Cochiti.
It was called by the Spaniards, San Josef
de la Laguna. Several great battles
were fought here in early days with the
Navahos and Apaches. The Laguna
Indians also occupy several smaller vil-
lages near by-Paquate, Negra, Encinal
and Casa Blanca.
Perched on a high rock near the rail-
road track, Laguna today is a peaceful
village of one thousand Indian pottery-
makers, farmers, sheep-owners and their
families.
A wagon road leads south to the En-
chanted Mesa and Acoma.
