MEMPHIS, TENN.
Memphis was founded in 1819 by Andrew
Jackson, John Overton and James Winchester; the
latter named the town. It was incorporated in
1826 at which time it had a population of less
than five hundred and an area of one square mile.
It is now the state's largest city, one of the nations
largest inland ports and the world's largest cotton
market.
