Front:
"BOYDVILLE", MARTINSBURG, W. VA. This beautiful colonial mansion sits back of a twenty-acre
grove and lawn on South Queen Street. It was built in 1812 by General Elisha Boyd, and upon his death
was occupied by his son-in-law, Hon. Charles James Faulkner, Congressman and Minister to France. It is
now the property of the latter's son, Hon. Charles James Faulkner, ex-United States Senator. Dur-
ing the Civil War the property was ordered burned by General Hunter, but owing to the intervention of
local citizens and a telegram sent by the Faulkners to President Lincoln, the order was countermanded.
