COLUMBIA'S ST. ANNE'S CATHOLIC CHURCH
This Church, thought to be the first brick church in California, was started in 1852, was fin-
ished in 1856. Bricks in building made locally. Large timbers were hand-hewn nearby. Funds
and aid for the building were given by miners. Three miners donated their rich claims for the
site. Belfry was added in 1851. Bell costing $1500.00 was cast in New York, brought around the
horn in 1856, hung in 1857. Interior paintings are work of James Fallon, son of a pioneer.
Father Slatterly, leader in the work, was the first priest. Cypress trees in front planted in 1882
by Rose Solari in memory of her husband.
