SKETCH of BATTLE of PEARIDGE
On March 6, 1862 The Confederates Under Command of General Sterling Price
Attacked the Union Forces Commanded by General Curtis, While encamped
at Bentonville, And Forced the Union men to retreat Northwest to Elk
Horn Tavern
On the Night of March 6, 1862 General Curtis was reinforced by General
Segil From the North Who Marched his troops by the Way of The Old Wires
road "Which one Can now see as he looks Northward from the Tavern.
General Curtis and Segil withdrew their troops to the top of the Mountain Just back of the
"Tavern" And Waited For the Confederates to Charge. The morning of march 7, Found Both the
Union & the Confederates Short of Ammunition, but the Confederates Made A Final Attack Which was Met by
the Union Artillery From the Mountains, The battle was claimed by both, but the Confederates withdrew
to Helena, the Eastern Part of the state & left Arkansas in the hands of the Union forces, Both sides
lost heavily: The Union Forces Numbered Some 20.000 With a loss of About
4,000 While 15,000 Confederates and Indians Under the Command of
General Price lost About 3,000. Total Wounded 6,264
