Laurel Mountain Curve, U.S. Route 50, between Grafton,
West Virginia and Red House, Maryland. No monotonous
inter-state driving here but the most rewarding scenic beauty
at the entrance to the most wild and wonderful area of West
Virginia. This road was completed from Winchester, Virginia
to Parkersburg, West Virginia in 1838. Virginia underwrote
the sum of $125,000.00 for the project and the chief engineer
was Colonel Claudius Crozet, one of Napoleon's officers and
engineering instructor at West Point.
