The Mary Surratt House was the home of the first woman executed by the United States Government. Mary Surratt was sent to the Gallows on July 7, 1865 for her alleged involvement in the plot to assassinate President Lincoln. Her guilt or innocence is still the subject of serious debate. During the 1850's and 60's the house was operated as a tavern by the Surratt family and also served the community of Spratt family and also served the community of Surrattsville (today's Clinton) as a post office and polling place. the Mary Surratt House is owned and operated by the Maryland - National Capital Park and Planning Commission and is open for tours on a regular basis.
