FIRST MONUMENT TO GEORGE WASHINGTON
Near Alt. U. S. 40, Boonsboro, Md.
The first monument erected to the memory of
George Washington is located on top of South
Mountain near Boonsboro, whose citizens built it in
1827. The original monument was gradually re-
duced to a state of near-ruins over the years,
but it was restored in 1936 and is now a State
Park, with picnicking and sanitary facilities and
a good access road.
