THE CHESAPEAKE AND OHIO CANAL
This view was made a few miles west of Williamsport, Md.
Geo. Washington inspired the beginning of the Canal near the
end of the 1700's along the Va. shore of the Potomac River.
This was soon abandoned and in 1828 a new company began
on the Md. side of the river. It took 22 years to finish in 1850.
The 184-1/2 mile canal cost 2 million dollars. 74 lift locks
raised the canal from Great Falls to Cumberland, Md. in the
Allegheny Mts. By the time it was completed it was already out
dated but operated until 1924. Today it is used by the public
as a hiking-camping and horseback riding trail under the
direction of the National Park Service.
