Additional Details:
The first monument erected to the memory of George Washington is located on top of south Mountain near Boonsboro, whose citizens built it in 1827. The original monument was gradually reduced to a state of near-ruins over the years, but it was restored and rededicated by the Odd Fellows Lodge of Boonsboro, Md. on July 4, 1882. It was restored & rededicated again in 1936 by the C.C.C. It has a good access road with camping, picnicking and sanitary facilities.
