THIS BRONZE STATUE OF COL. CLARK,
the conquering hero of the Northwest, stands nine
feet and two inches in height, supported on a circu-
lar fluted marble pedestal and rests on a bronze
plaque in the marble floor. There is a wreath of
oak and laurel surrounding the pedestal. Clark was
commissioned by Gov. Patrick Henry of Virginia to
capture the British forts at Kaskaskia and Cahokio
and was successful in this enterprise by_taking both
these towns in July, 1778; Vincennes February 25,
1779. He was born in Virginia 1752 and died in
1818. He is buried in the beautiful Cave Hill
Cemetery, Louisville, Ky.
