This representation of the Holy Family,
Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child, sculptured
by Felix A. Lucero, stands on the west bank
of the Santa Cruz River at the Congress Street
Bridge in Tucson. Lucero, a member of the
268th Infantry of the 1st Division in World
War I, was trapped in a shell hole with 24
other members of his company while the
Germans spread a blazing blanket of Hell
over the field. There he vowed that if his life
were spared he would devote the remainder
of his energies to the glorification of Christ.
