Santa Clara is situated on the west bank of
the Rio Grande about thirty miles north of
Santa Fe. The town has retained much of its
original picturesqueness and shows no very
great trace of Spanish influence. Not the
least interesting features of this pueblo are
its Kivas or underground chambers where the
sacred rites and ceremonies are held. One of
the Kivas is above ground and is square, an
exception to the general rule among the
pueblos.
