Main Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison, built and first occu-
pied in 1887, with associated smaller brick structures, as the
first fully equipped experimental laboratory in the world for
organized industrial research. The later Gate House and part
of the reconstructed Black Maria (Edison's Motion picture
studio) may be seen at the extreme left. These buildings are
now included in the EDISON LABORATORY NATIONAL
MONUMENT, West Orange, N. J.
