The handsome brick structure at the northeast corner of Piccadilly and Braddock streets is the Winchester Post Office. It was erected at a cost of $50,000, and was opened in 1910. The convenient arrangement of the present quarters offers a striking contrast to the facilities of a century ago, when the people of the town had to wait their turn in an alley and receive their mail through a window, even though rain might be pouring. In those days the postage on a letter was paid by the person receiving it, and in consequence there was always a lengthy list of advertised letters. |
