For more than a century and a half the site of the building with second and third story colonial columns was the location of the leading local hotel. The original house was erected in 1755. The place was once known as the 'General Washington,' later the 'Coffee House,' and then 'Taylor Hotel.' Among the noted guests were Washington, Clay and Webster—the latter addressed an audience from the porch. Several Civil War generals made headquarters here, and General Banks used it as a hospital. Before railroads came, stage lines to various cities started from its door. |
