This view was taken from the Jefferson Highway on the summit of the Blue Ridge, near which point the counties of Augusta, Albemarle and Nelson converge. Beneath is the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad tunnel. It was at this point that the Shenandoah Valley militia, many members of which were armed only with stones and sticks, gathered in the summer of 1781 to stop Tarleton's cavalry, which was expected to continue in pursuit of the Virginia Legislature. The legislators had been forced by the British to move from Richmond to Charlottesville and then to Staunton. |
