Additional Details:
The history of the Luray public schools shows a rapid development. The four front rooms of the stately building above were erected in 1882, four more were added in 1906, six more in 1910 when the Luray Seminary was absorbed, and seven more in 1922. The total enrollment is now over 700. Incidentally the act providing for Virginia's free school system became a law on July 11, 1870, and Dr. Wm. H. Ruffner, son of Dr. Henry Ruffner, President of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) and a native of Page County, was the first State Superintendent.
