Additional Details:
This fine school for girls was founded in 1842 as Augusta Female Seminary, and is owned by the Presbyterian Church of the South. In 1896 the school was given its present name in honor of Miss Mary Baldwin, who in 1863, during the trying days of the Civil War, became its principal and devoted thirty-four years of her life to its development. In 1923 a new charter was granted, which provides for Mary Baldwin College to be located about one mile north of Staunton. The school has about 200 boarding and 150 day pupils, and prepares for Class A colleges.
