Shenandoah County, organized in 1772, was first called Dunmore for Governor Guy of that name, and the name becoming unpopular the name was changed to 'Shenandoah,' given this court house and the Indian appellation, 'Shenandoah,' for the Blue Ridge, either in 1791, is probably the oldest west of the Ridge. Indian delegations, going to the 'Great Father,' either in 1812, 1846, 1861, 1898 and 1917. Indians have gazed upon its staunch walls. Only a few yards away Muhlenberg's famous drama of the Revolution was enacted.
